What Vinny Heard
Vinny takes a deep breath and looks around to make sure no one else can hear. His voice drops to almost a whisper.
“Billy and Charlie… they were talking about finding Danny Morrison. But not like the search parties. They said they know exactly where he is.” He swallows hard. “They said he’s dead. Hit by a train near Back Harlow Road, maybe three days ago.”
The words hang in the air like a thunderclap. Danny Morrison isn’t missing – he’s dead. And somehow, Vinny’s brother and his friend know where the body is but haven’t told anyone.
“Why haven’t they reported it?” Gary asks, his voice barely audible.
“Because they were in Billy’s car,” Vinny explains. “They dumped it in the woods when they heard the train coming. They’re scared they’ll get in trouble for having a stolen car.”
Tom’s eyes light up with a mixture of excitement and morbid curiosity. “So we could find him. We could be the ones to find Danny Morrison.”
“We could be heroes,” you realize aloud.
